Joining us in New York: The Steve Denny Trio

THE STEVE DENNY TRIO

The Steve Denny Trio will be joining David Goldthorpe on stage for Chet Baker: Like Someone in Love at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club for two performances only.

The Steve Denny Trio originated from the bucolic fields of Greeley, Colorado where three University of Northern Colorado jazz students found a common creative bond playing unabashedly straight-forward and swinging music with a heartfelt sensibility and modern edge. The trio’s musical purview includes original music and jazz standards creatively arranged to pay homage to the great musicians and music of the past. The group is committed to honoring the timeless music from the vast jazz lexicon and to the ongoing evolution and growth of the art form. The SDtrio performs regularly along the front range and has collaborated with many notable musicians including vocalist Lisa Engelken, Steve Kovalcheck, and Ken Walker.

STEVE DENNY - piano

Steve Denny is an accomplished pianist, composer and educator living in New York City.  He holds a BA in music from Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and an MM in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. In March of 2012, the Steve Denny Trio celebrated the release of their inaugural recording project, Life in the Basement, out on the Dazzle Recordings label, which features an eclectic array of Steven’s original compositions that bridge the gap between the swinging, spirited feel of familiar jazz standards and the emotive harmonies and complex textures of modern music.  Steve has performed with many notable jazz artists including Slide Hampton, Stefon Harris, Marco Panascia, Paul Warburton, Ken Walker and Al Hood. Steve is a leader and sideman for multiple musical outfits, performing often at New York venues such as Silvana, Pianos, and Somethin’ Jazz Club.

ALEX SPRADLING - bass

Alex Spradling has quickly established himself as one of New York City’s most promising young bassists. A finalist in the 2012 International Society of Bassists Competition, Alex has been recognized for his “extraordinary virtuosity” and deep sense of swing. Alex attended the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and Manhattan School of Music, both on scholarship. Alex has performed and recorded with legends of the music and trailblazing young talents alike, these include: Dave Liebman, Rich Perry, Peter Eldridge, Cassandra Wilson, Richie Barshay, Colin Stranahan, Glenn Zaleski, Misha Tsiganov, Peter Mazza, Mike Rood, and Lukas Gabric to name a few.

BEN WATERS - drums

Ben Waters currently lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is in demand as a drummer and music educator in the Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York areas. A member of the Steve Denny Trio, he is featured on the trio’s latest album, Life in the Basement. He has served as percussion and jazz faculty for the Fairbanks Summer Fine Arts Academy, and the University of Northern Colorado Summer Jazz Camps. He has been a featured percussionist with the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival All-Stars. Ben holds two Master of Music degrees, one in jazz studies and one in percussion performance.
